The north of Italy boasts two natural treasures so apart from the alps the most beautiful mirror to these mountains are the lakes. So much has been written about them and they are the scene settings in many books from Henry James and many composers of melodramatic opera sat by the lakes to be inspired. Romantic poets like Keats wrote of the lakes and yet today they can be known as the place the stars have their home. Lake Como can boast hosting George Clooney and making an appearance in the latest movie Ocean's Twelve. There are a number of lakes and each is quite characteristic and individual. The lakes nearest to Bergamo are Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. Lake Como has to be the most striking of the lakes and no wonder George bought a villa here. The scenery is stunning with the tall mountains that rise out of the waters of the lake and the thick vegetation that nestles the most magnificent seventeenth century villas. Boating tranquilly on the lake is bliss as are the walks in the surrounding areas. Alternatively the Lake Maggiore is more sedate with regards it scenery and less spectacular in contrast. It is surrounded by small resorts that make for great walks not forgetting Isola Bella that has some beautiful gardens. Of the smaller lakes in the vicinity, Lago d'Orta is picture perfect and not to be missed especially during the spring or autumn. Lake Iseo is closer to Bergamo but in comparison to the other lakes has nothing to mark it and Como is really where you head. Between the lakes are some interesting hill area that make for wonderful walks and hikes. You can also find lesser slopes in this area during the winter months. |
