Gaming is a major pass time in Bergamo and so the osterie or local restaurants have menus full of game birds and foul. The city is full of local places to eat these specialities and like most provinces in Italy there are specialty dishes and pastas too. A very pleasant way to have lunch is buying fresh produce from the delicatessens that offer salumis from the area and wonderful fresh breads to make panini. The area near the university are, for obvious reasons, the cheapest in the city. Caffè Funicolare, Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. Closed Tues. The view from the terrace is terrific and the light meals it serves are great value and it stays until late if you need to snack around one in the morning. Da Mimmo, Via Colleoni 17. Closed Tues. Mimmo does great good value pizzas at a price that belies the fancy décor and the hillsides views are fantastic. Donizetti, Via Gombito 17a. Here you get to do the full meal in the perfect atmosphere sititng outside in an old market square. The restaurant also does degustazione or tasting with a platter of meats and cheeses. Vineria Cozzi, Via Colleoni 22a. Closed Wed. This is more of a wine bar although the species doesn't exist per se in Bergamo but it is a more up market bar with an excellent selection of wines and a buffet to accompany you wine tasty. They have over 300 wines. Antica Osteria del Vino Buono, Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. Closed Mon. This is one of the reasons you eat out in Bergamo. This is a very jovial ambience in which to enjoy local dishes and at very reasonable prices. It is situated at the top of the funicular. Birreria con Cucina, Via Porta Dipinta 30b. Closed Mon. This is the Italian version of a pub and so is a cross between a anglosaxon pub and a german one. It serves meals of all sorts but does snacks and pizzas to accompany the beer. Cooperativa Citta Altà , Vicolo Sant'Agata. Closed Wed. This cooperative is a canteen for wine sales that also serves as a bar and stays open until late. The advantages of it being a cooperative is that it gets to offer drinks and food at low prices. As it is in the high part of the city it boasts great views. Da Franco, Via Colleoni 8. Closed Mon. One of the specialities on the list at this restaurant is the corn based polenta that are served with salamis, mushrooms and gorgonzola. Try the set menu which is great value. Da Vittorio, Via Papa Giovanni XXIII 21. Closed Wed. This restaurant is considered the best dining experience in Bergamo and it has been for quite some time. The prices are reasonable which adds to its popularity. Osteria Airoldi, Viale Giovanni XXIII 18. Closed Sun lunch. This osteria is a two in one on a split level experience. Downstairs is a restaurant with a well priced menu. Upstairs are rather more particular offerings done in aspic, worth a try if you are into aspic. |
