Bergamo Cittą Bassa is an exuberant statement of neoclassic style and is unfortunate in that it has to compete with the older and undoubtedly more beautiful upper city. This half of the city is where daily business and commerce takes place. The centre of the lower city evolves around Piazza Matteotti that boasts pleasant gardens and monuments that is joined on the north west by the Piazza Vittorio Veneto centred around the war memorial La Torre dei Caduti. The south east of the Piazza has two neoclassical gatehouses. Viale Vittorio Emanuele II is the main artey of the lower city and inevitably leads to the the upper city. East of Piazza Matteotti is the busiest street called the Sentierone and in this street stands the Teatro Donzietti and in Piazza Cavour is a monument to the city's famous composer. In the same street you can find the church of San Bartolomeo that places Lotto's Madonna with Ten Saints behind the high altar. This work's only competition is the Madonna with four saints by the same artist in the nearby church of Santo Spirito. And to complete the tris you can enjoy the Madonna Enthroned, again by Lotto, in the tiny church of San Bernardino in Pignolo. There are great views of the lower city from above bu the best places to enjoy the views is by walking up the castle that is on the summit of San Vigilio. It is a very pleasant walk to the castle and even better is the chance to go and explore on guided tours the maze of underground passages. In the end, the best thing to be said about Bergamo Cittą Bassa is that you get the best views of it from Bergamo Cittą Alta! |
